Feed baby cows

Here are a few pictures of our latest adventure. Eric has been working on cleaning out an unused barn so he can raise calves. He got two stalls cleaned out and purchased four little bull calves. We should have gotten some pictures of them when they were new, they were so cute! Too bad they can't stay little and cute, someday they will be big, not so cute steers.
Grace loves to help feed them. Since Eric has to feed them both in the morning and evening, he has to go over there before work. If Grace is ready by the time he leaves to feed them in the morning she will sometimes go along to help. When she is not ready she can't know that Eric is leaving to "feed baby cows" without her or we have a little tantrum on our hands.

She is too small to carry the full milk pails but she can help feed pellets. After they all drink down their buckets of milk replacer Grace can give them a couple scoops of pellets. The day I was there taking pictures Eric had run out of pellets, she kept insisting it was time to feed pellets. When Eric left to pick some up she ran around the barn and found the empty bag. She was pretty disappointed when she discovered it was empty. Those baby cows are hungry for pellets, and she needed to feed them!

I also wish we would have thought to get some before pictures of the barn. It was a mess! Every stall was full of junk and the ally was full of car engines, lawn mowers and more assorted junk. It looks totally different now, and smells less like cat and more like cows (and that is somehow better). Eric also replaced most of the windows which means it is a whole lot lighter in there. Most of the windows were broken out and covered with something other than glass.

Grace talks about the calves a lot. If she hears us talking about them she will start talking about them too. Ask her about baby cows and she will say something like this: Baby cows. Pellets. Lick you. Milk. Pellets. Tail. Baby cows.

  2. Great pictures for Grace & Micah's future! This is where it began! You are such a blessing the way you work all week and still find time to help Eric with calves and lawn - of course since you posted these pictures you have bought several more calves - may your hard work prosper and bless you and your family! Love, Grandma D.
